Job Description

Summer Guides

Summer Camp at the Field School of Hvar is a weekday, non-boarding program for children ages 4 through 12 on one of the most beautiful islands in the world. We provide a nature and play-based, learner-led, and interdisciplinary exploration of science and the arts, through the lens of Hvar’s Mediterranean landscape and culture. Enrollment is by the week, with full and half-day options.

The magic of childhood - its boundless curiosity and special sweetness - are at the heart of what The Field School nurtures and celebrates. While offering a convivial, undistracted environment for families, our summer program primarily focuses on activating the multiple benefits that children draw from time spent in nature, play, and creative pursuits. We are looking for individuals who are similarly captivated by the ability of children to wonder and grow.

We are hiring a Guide for our Early Learners group of at most 5 preschool-aged children (all potty-trained) from Monday, August 5- Friday, August 30. Ideally, you would be able to join for a week of shadowing and getting to know the children from Monday, July 29 - August 3.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate recent experience providing a safe, nurturing, and developmental environment to young children in a learner-led, outdoor setting.

Dates and Hours

Guides should ideally plan to be on Hvar for the periods described above (latter half of summer for Upper Elementary, and full summer for Middle). However, we know that many candidates are calibrating this opportunity with other commitments. If you cannot be present for this full term, drop us a note with your start and end dates.

The program runs Monday through Friday for eight hours per day, divided up into two, four-hour sessions:

  • The morning session runs from 8am-12pm.

  • The afternoon session runs from 4pm-8pm.

On-site Responsibilities

  • Deliver developmentally appropriate small group tutorials every day

  • Support STEM-oriented labs and moderate child-led, text-based roundtable discussions

  • Ensure safe and developmental environment for students during school hours, including on field trips, during hands-on workshops, and in frequent outdoor play settings

  • Work with children to maintain a clean and orderly environment: straightening up after play and meals; assist with child hygiene as need

  • Communicate promptly and professionally with faculty, staff, and partners, including providing timely and constructive feedback to other members of staff as requested

  • Be willing to co-create activities with instructors as opportunities arise

Advance Responsibilities

There is no expectation of labor outside of the hours outlined above, such as parent conferences or lesson planning, but we do ask for your feedback on your lesson plans in advance of the summer. You will be provided with a detailed, day-by-day plan for your lessons in the spring, including a list of materials and local hosts for activities (e.g. the botanist who will be leading a garden visit). If you spot any potential issues based on your experience as an educator, we ask that you present those insights proactively so that we can course-correct in a timely way. We will consolidate this feedback session into a one-hour call to make best use of your time.

Compensation

  • A monthly stipend of €800

  • A private studio apartment in the charming and walkable town of Stari Grad.

  • Daily transportation to and from the program.

  • A healthy snack in the morning and dinner in the evening every weekday, freshly prepared at a local restaurant

  • A summer on Hvar with access to beaches, nightlife, and world-class outdoor recreation

Qualifications

  • Four year college degree in Education or a related field

  • Experience in implementing child-led pedagogy

  • Training in first aid for children

  • Ability handle light physical tasks (arranging learning materials, walking up hills)

  • Ability to deal with typical Mediterranean heat, comfortable swimmer

  • Must be willing to submit a background check and drug test, if requested

  • Must be a fluent English speaker

  • This role is in-person only

To apply for this role, please send your resume and a brief note explaining your interest in our program to The Field School of Hvar’s Director Carolyn Zelikow at carolyn (at) fieldschoolhvar.org. We look forward to meeting you!
