Teen Guide

Program Overview

The Field School of Hvar is a family slow travel experience, inviting parents and children to find equilibrium and joy on Hvar, an island off the Adriatic coast of Croatia. This role is responsible for a 35-hour per week program for teens ages 13-16. The broader enrichment program serves younger children, who develop academic and socio-emotional skills through immersion in the island’s nautical and artisanal heritage. Our core values are knowledge, nature, and family.

Dates and Hours

The Guide role is a seasonal contract position.

The Guide will arrive on Saturday, June 21 for a week of acclimation, training on school policies, and shadowing.

Beginning with an orientation session on Sunday, June 29, the Guide will lead students Monday through Friday until July 18th.

Saturday, July 19th is a departure day.

Typical Day

  • 100pm, faculty hour for planning, discussion, and administration

  • 200pm, welcome students & deliver context-setting lesson (what is buoyancy? what is the coastal ecosystem of Hvar?)

  • 300pm, water activities (sailing, marine biology, etc)

  • 530pm, harvest, cook, eat, and clean dinner with food workshop leader (not the teacher)

  • 700pm, cultural outing, folk craft, or boatmaking

  • 830pm, return to learning center for evening goodbye

Reports to: Field School Director

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand and implement interdisciplinary, place-based curriculum illustrating the value and beauty of science, history, and literature through hands-on activities.

  • Foster child agency and climate consciousness by building meaningful, uplifting mentor relationships with students and their families. Manage behavior through peer-led restorative justice practices.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of up to 10 adolescents in indoor and outdoor environments. Administer first aid and outdoor rescue should the need arise.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience working with groups of adolescents.

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional teaching at the secondary school or college level preferred.

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience leading groups of adolescents in non-classroom settings preferred.

Skills

  • Ability to implement place-based, experiential education in a new landscape (Hvar)

  • Exceptional patience, humor, and passion for working with teens in a holistic education environment

  • A high level of professionalism, emotional intelligence, and clarity in communications with colleagues and parents.

  • Professional experience in swimming and water activities with children or adolescents preferred

  • Nature-based, place-based, experiential, and outdoor educators will find themselves at home here

Work Environment

The Field School of Hvar is centered in a 220sm indoor learning space with air-conditioning which overlooks the Adriatic Sea. Children spend most of their time outside, on the water, on farms, and in historic villages, which are walkable, safe, and relatively small.

The work environment will include exposure to varying weather conditions, such as sun, summer heat, wind, and occasional rain. The guide should have appropriate attire for both indoor and outdoor activities. The proximity to the sea will offer opportunities for water-based activities, such as supervised diving, swimming, and boating, which requires close adherence to safety protocols due to risks.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move around easily in various environments, including stairs, steep hikes, and the sea

  • Capability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and assist students with physical activities such as moving kayaks

  • Prolonged periods of standing, swimming, and walking

Salary and Benefits:

  • Base salary of €18.75/hour which is €3,000 for the month

  • Relocation allowance of €1,000 for flights

  • Assistance in finding comfortable and affordable accommodations

  • One fresh, locally sourced meal per day, Monday through Friday

All faculty from outside the EEA will be sponsored for seasonal work contracts. These contracts do not include dependents, but spouses or partners from most countries will be able to attend without a visa.

This session is already full, so we unfortunately cannot accommodate children of faculty.
